Welcome to project 2:
I had my little assistant (Bella) help me with today's tutorial - sculpey (polymer clay/fimo) necklaces with crocheted chain. They turned out even cuter than the vision that I had in my head and Bella totally loves hers! They're strong and would make a lovely gift for little ones to give their friends - Bella made a few extra for some of her nice friends.
Here's what you need to create your giant heart necklace:
♥ Sculpey/fimo etc..
♥ A heart cookie cutter
♥ A rolling pin (to flatten and smooth out the clay)
♥ An oven - for clay baking. 130 degrees for 15 minutes or follow the directions on your clay packet
♥ A thick needle - or something to create a nice big hole in the heart
♥ Yarn - for the necklace string
♥ Sculpey glaze - totally optional, but we bought some from the local art store today and it gives such a shiny/yummy appearance to the necklace
♥ Crochet hook, but don't feel limited if you don't have one. You can also plait 3 pieces of yarn together for a cute look too
♥ Craft board and some cling wrap - it's handy to stop your rolling pin being covered in clay
Let's get started! Warm the sculpey in your hands and then roll it out - not too thin, you want it a little bit chunky.
Use a cookie cutter to create your heart.
Use a needle (or perhaps you have something better) to create a hole in the top of the heart. Bella wiggled the needle around a few times to make the hole big enough for the crochet chain to go through.
Pop the hearts in the oven and bake for 15 minutes.
While they're baking away, crochet up (or plait) the chain. Keep working until you're happy with the necklace length, remembering the heart will stretch/weigh down the chain a little bit, because of it's weight.
Once the hearts are cool, add a layer of Sculpey glaze (if desired).
Thread the crochet chain onto the heart, as shown above.
Wear your very own heart necklace and be proud! Make some for your friends too - tomorrow I'm going to show you how to package them up all pretty :)
